Clearly written text accompanies an extensive array of exercises, fingering diagrams and musical examples, covering every possible question that may arise on the subject. The unique requirements of each member of the sax family (soprano, alto, tenor and baritone) receive special focus, making the book equally valuable to classical and jazz players and their teachers."

Recommended Mouthpieces

Saxophone
Ron Caravan,
large chamber,
soprano sax
alto sax
tenor sax
bari sax
This is the mouthpiece I play for classical / band performances. Paired with a Rovner Light ligature, it offers a full dark, round sound without muddiness. This mouthpiece is made from hard rubber and finished by Syracuse University saxophone professor Ronald Caravan.

(Click on the type of saxophone to the left, and then scroll down to find the Caravan mouthpiece.)
Selmer S80,
C* model,
soprano sax
alto sax
tenor sax
bari sax
The C* is a good step up from the stock mouthpieces that come with most student saxophones. Pair this mouthpiece with a Rovner Dark ligature. The C* has a flexible sound that is brighter than a Caravan's.
Clarinet
VanDoren M13,
B-flat clarinet
I play on this mouthpiece for classical / band performances and in pits. The profile 88 marking on the mouthpiece means a lower external angle of the beak for more comfortable playing. The M13 allows the player to play with less resistance and a fuller dynamic range while keeping a rich, pure sound.

Recommended Ligatures

Saxophone
Rovner, Light
The Rovner ligature is well-built and long lasting. It holds the reed equally at all points as it wraps around the mouthpiece and reed. This leads to no reed pressure points and allows for a beautiful, un-dampened sound.

The Light model has a cut-out in the middle to make less contact with the reed. It offers a lighter, more open tone than the Mark III. Use it with a Caravan mouthpiece to eliminate muddiness.
Rovner,
Mark III

The Rovner ligature is well-built and long lasting. It holds the reed equally at all points as it wraps around the mouthpiece and reed. This leads to no reed pressure points and allows for a beautiful, un-dampened sound.

The Mark III model is an updated model which allows for a more substantial sound. Use it with a Selmer 80 C* or other brighter mouthpiece.
Clarinet
Rovner, Mark III
The Rovner ligature is well-built and long lasting. It holds the reed equally at all points as it wraps around the mouthpiece and reed. This leads to no reed pressure points and allows for a beautiful, un-dampened sound.

The Mark III model is an updated model which allows for a more substantial sound than the traditional Rovner Dark ligature.

Recommended Reeds

Saxophone
VanDoren, traditional,
soprano sax
alto sax
tenor sax
bari sax
The VanDoren traditional reed is perfect for classical / band performance. Its pure tone and rich responsiveness make it the perfect choice for a C* or Caravan mouthpiece.
VanDoren,
V16,
soprano sax
alto sax
tenor sax
The V16 reed is more flexible and brighter than the traditional style. It's great for jazz and rock performance. I find it works particularly well with my metal mouthpieces. It also gives a great edge to a Caravan or C* while keeping the round sound of the mouthpiece.
Clarinet
VanDoren,
V12,
B-flat clarinet
The V12 gives a very focused and pure sound while projecting well. I use the V12 reed with a VanDoren M13 mouthpiece, and my clarinet sings!
